I firmly believe that everybody should go through therapy at some stage in their life. Many people have an image of therapy that looks like somebody laying on a couch while somebody quietly takes notes on everything that they’re saying, but in actual fact, a patient-therapist relationship is incredibly symbiotic.

And if you find the right therapist, then a therapy session can feel like you’re just touching base with a friend. If you are still on the fence about whether talking to a mental health professional is right for you, here are five reasons that I think everybody should try therapy.

Therapy helps you focus on your goals

The thing about life is that it’s kind of noisy. You have voices coming at you from every angle, telling you where your priorities should lie, and it can be really stressful to establish which voices you should be listening to.

Therapy can be an excellent tool in identifying what you want for yourself, instead of just trying to please everybody around you, and how you can focus your efforts on achieving those goals.

You get closer to knowing your true self

Therapy is useful for all kinds of situations. It can be just as useful for somebody who is in a mental health crisis as it is for somebody who is struggling with their next step to take in life; mental health services are for everybody, and they can be adapted to suit you and your needs.

What is interesting about therapy is that you don’t always have a specific question or problem that you wish to be resolved, but in many cases, it is more about connecting with your inner self and learning more about who you are as a person. The dream for any therapist is to be the person who shows you who you are and allows you to fall in love with yourself.

A therapist is a neutral third party

Many people attend therapy when they are going through some type of conflict in their life. Whether it is a marriage going through a rough patch or a strained relationship with a parent or friend, sometimes it helps to have a neutral third party to talk it all through with.

The reason for this is that the people in your life generally have some vested interest or bias, so although they might be able to give you advice, there is always the risk that they are telling you something that they know you want to hear.

A therapist is always going to be honest with you, and instead of giving you advice, they are more likely to guide you into finding your truth for yourself.

Therapy is like hitting the pause button

My life is incredibly busy sometimes, and I struggle to keep up. Throughout all the noise of my obligations around me.

I can often feel like I am living life on autopilot, and nobody really hears me in the chaos or understands my needs – so I just keep walking forward through it all. If this sounds like how you are living your life, then therapy could be a great fit for you.

therapy gives you an opportunity to stop all the noise for an hour, and just have somebody focus on you and how you are feeling and experiencing life. Sometimes all it takes is knowing that somebody is there just to listen to you, for you to feel more in control of your life.

Attending therapy can help you feel more settled

There are so many reasons that somebody might not be feeling settled in their lives. The day-to-day pace of life and work can sometimes be too much to manage while juggling varying types of relationships can lead to real inner conflict.

It’s no wonder, then, that so many people are left feeling like they don’t know what is waiting for them around every corner. Therapy gives you time to process each situation, teaching you to prioritise the things that really matter to you, and better prepare you for anything that life throws at you. Once you feel more stable and settled, you are more likely to succeed in all areas of your life.
