I’ve always loved the idea of a road trip, and when I saw the #RoadTripForOlderAdults campaign I thought it would be fun to plan something that I could do with an older family member like a parent or even an aunt or uncle. In my ideal road trip I would start at the bottom of the country and make my way up, ending my trip after a boat ride to a Scottish island, so that I could make the most of what both England and Scotland have to offer. Here are five stops I would make on my #RoadTripForOlderAdults.

Afternoon tea at Cliveden House
Although a road trip might not be everybody’s idea of luxury travel, I would like to make our trip a little bit more fancy by doing some luxurious things along the way. One of these would be indulging in afternoon tea at Cliveden House in Berkshire, which offers arguably one of the best afternoon teas in the country. This will fuel us for carrying on with our trip, while creating memories that we would remember forever.
Ambling through York
York is one of the most culturally significant towns in the country, with a rich history of Viking settlement and gorgeous cobbled streets that could keep you occupied for hours. An amble through York is a great way to pick up some fantastic souvenirs from our trip, as well as soaking in some English culture and simply enjoying our time together.
Spend a night at the Edinburgh Grand
If I am going to be driving across the length of the country, I want to make sure that me and my family member have somewhere that we can relax in style and luxury, to recharge our batteries for the rest of the trip and offer comfort and support to our aching bones after such a long drive. The Edinburgh Grand is one of the fanciest hotels in the country, so I would absolutely love to splurge on a night here as a special treat to celebrate the drive.
Walking tour of the Highlands
My older family members love to get out into the world and blow the cobwebs away with a long walk, and the Highlands of Scotland have some fantastic walking tours available. Walking through the Highlands means being one with nature and getting to soak in some of the country’s most beautiful scenery, with towering mountains and even the occasional deer might cross your path!
Learn about history at Skara Brae
At the top of the country I would get a boat across to Orkney, which is a group off islands off the North coast of Scotland. The island is packed full of historical sites, but one notable one is Skara Brae, which is a Neolithic community and museum documenting how people lived their lives. This is an excellent day out with a little bit of walking through the countryside, and lots of learning opportunities for young and old people alike.
